On Dec. 5, Brian Thomspon, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed outside a Hilton Hotel in New York City. Thompson had two sons—ages 16 and 19—and lived with his wife, Paulette, in Minnesota. Thompson’s attacker approached him from behind, firing multiple times before fleeing the scene on an e-bike. Police later recovered gun shillings and a backpack in Central Park containing Monopoly money and other incriminating items.

Four days later, Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old University of Pennsylvania graduate, was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, after a customer recognized him from the surveillance footage. Mangione, previously valedictorian of an elite Maryland prep school, comes from a prominent family.

Authorities revealed Mangione harbored anti-corporate sentiments, as indicated by a handwritten note found during his arrest. As of Dec. 12, Mangione is currently being held in maximum security as a New York grand jury reviews evidence.
