Spring Sports Recap and Preparation

As the air warms and snow melts, our winter sports are officially coming to an end. With that being said, our spring sports have been gearing up for their season, ready to come out strong.

Our varsity baseball team has already started off the season strong with a record of 6-2. Playing their first game Feb. 4 against Florida High, the Marauders won with a score of 5-4. Varsity head coach Greg Mullins has been preparing the athletes for each game so they could leave the field with their heads high.

“We practice six days a week,” junior Noah Chavez said. “We usually just work on fundamental stuff to better ourselves for our games.”

The boys and girls varsity tennis teams started their season, with the boys having a record of 2-3 and the girls with a record of 5-0. Both teams played their first match on Feb. 7 at Community Christian. The boys lost their match with a score of 4-3 while the girls won the match with a score of 7-0. With their coach Chuck Bunker, both teams are hoping to bring home more victories and play their best.

“We do group hits at practices, so as a team we hit around with each other to practice,” junior Alex Wang said. “We practice five times a week to prepare for our matches.

Boys and girls varsity lacrosse teams have been playing games left and right, the boys having a record of 3-3 and the girls having a record of 4-2. Boys played their first game on Feb. 15, winning against West Florida, finishing with a score of 20-2. Girls played their first game against South Walton on Feb. 19, ending the game with a score 19-3, losing the game. With their coaches Justin and Sara Vantassel, the lacrosse teams are in for a promising season ahead.

“We watch film and have drills that help us on the field, and every play we practice we try to perform on the field,” senior Sophia Wildrick said. “We practice everyday after school and have to lift twice a week along with team lifts every Friday.”

Maclay’s beach volleyball team has played two games so far, ultimately having a record of 0-2. On Feb. 25 and 27, the girls played against Liberty County and Blountstown, losing with a score of 4-1 for both games. Their coach Laura Sanderson is preparing the team and keeping their heads high, hoping to win their next game.

“We do partner drills and prepare ourselves for the games at practices,” junior Charlotte Le Du said. “We practice three days a week for our games.”

The start of spring means a new season for sports and new teams ready to show off their skills. Everyone is watching the games, excited to see what the Marauders have in store for us this year.
