Starting their season off defending Frank Shaw Field, the Maclay boys lacrosse team played the West Florida Jaguars on Saturday, Feb. 15. The game ended with a score of 20-2, the Marauders executing a great first game and win of their season.
The boys started the first half of the game strong, only allowing one goal compared to their 11 goals scored. They came back from halftime even stronger, letting one more goal for the other team and scoring another nine points, adding to their total of 20 points at the end of the game.
“It was pretty boring actually,” freshman Seann Vantassel said. “I was in cage a lot doing nothing, but then I got a few runs down the field.”
Vantassel had a major impact on the game, stopping almost every goal the Jaguars tried to score.
“I was thinking to just stay focused and listen to our coaches,” sophomore Jediah Stewart said. “Our coaches gave us a great game plan and if we listened to their advice we can go out and execute and come out with a win, which is exactly what we did.”
Senior Austin Kolman and freshman Barrett Brown were the top scorers of the game, both scoring six points. The team's hard work during practice showed on the field for their first game.
“I gave them [teammates] all words of encouragement,” senior captain Carson Stockton said. “I let them know what they did wrong so they could work on it so they can all succeed and do better for the next play.”
The Marauders play their next game at Chiles on Wednesday, Feb. 19. They hope to bring home a win from their first away game to create a winning streak for their season.
