Celebrating the Presidents Who Shaped Our Nation

This year, Presidents’ Day falls on Monday, Feb. 17. As a federally recognized holiday, Presidents' Day honors all of the United States presidents who have helped shape the nation through their leadership and guidance. Originally established in 1885 to celebrate President George Washington’s birthday, the holiday later evolved into “Presidents’ Day” after President Nixon passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971. This change also moved the holiday’s observance to the third Monday of February, aiming to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workforce in hopes of reducing employee absenteeism.
For 145 years, Americans have long celebrated this occasion. According to USA Today, all government and post offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be closed on Monday. Additionally, the U.S. stock market and most banks and educational institutions will also suspend their operations in observance of the holiday. As a day of remembrance and celebration, Presidents’ Day continues to honor the leaders who have shaped America’s history.
