“Transformers One” Rolls out a Fun Film
A Review on the 2024 Animated Prequel
“Transformers One,” released in theaters on Sept. 20, is a family-friendly action film that blends science fiction with a heartwarming story of friendship and teamwork. It is a wonderful addition to the Transformers universe, illustrating the origins of fan-favorite characters like Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Megatron. The film masterfully executes a central storyline, but it contains a major plot hole. Nonetheless, its compelling themes and engaging cinematography are sure to resonate with viewers, creating a fun film for everyone to enjoy.
The plot of “Transformers One” centers around a single, cohesive storyline that follows Orion Pax (Optimus Prime), D-16 (Megatron), B-127 (Bumblebee) and Elita-1 (Elita). Together, they embark on a perilous journey to the surface in hopes of finding the missing Matrix of Leadership, which holds the power to restore peace to Cybertron. We are introduced to the Quintessons, alien invaders who seek the energon flowing through the planet; however, their conflict remains unresolved by the film’s end. Although they are portrayed as a significant threat, the film only offers a vague warning at the end of the film, leaving audiences curious about their fate and suggesting a potential setup for a sequel.
“Transformers One” explores a range of compelling themes, including friendship, loyalty and betrayal. The bond between Orion Pax and D-16 sets the premises of the film, but as their personal ambitions diverge—Orion Pax striving for a peaceful future and D-16 seeking revenge—their friendship begins to fracture. The theme of loyalty plays a key role as well, with the Autobots being forced to choose sides. This division ultimately leads to betrayal, as a once-solid friendship shatters due to conflicting ideals. One of the major quotes in the film, delivered by Orion Pax, captures this shift: “The line between friend and enemy is not as clear as I once believed. Once it’s crossed, there is no going back.”
The cinematography in “Transformers One” is well done, especially since it is an animated film in contrast to the live-action style of previous Transformers movies. The vibrant animation allows for creative freedom, resulting in dynamic and visually engaging scenes, such as the Lacon 5000 race. The character designs are accurate and easily recognizable, even though the film is an origin story where the main characters have not yet transformed.
