One Sided Bout

Jake Paul Changes the Rules of His Upcoming Match Against Mike Tyson

Jake Paul, the once world famous youtuber, has changed his focus from Youtube to professional boxing. Since 2020, Paul has fought in 10 bouts, winning nine and losing one. His one loss came from Tommy Fury in February 2023, but Paul has been relentless in his other fights, knocking out six of his opponents. Paul has yet to be ranked by the World Boxing Council (WBC) but has already made a name for himself in the boxing world. His success has led him to fight one of the greatest boxers of all time: Mike Tyson.

Because Tyson was one of the most feared and greatest boxers of all time, Paul and Tyson’s teams have agreed upon unfamiliar rules. Both fighters will wear protective headgear and 16-ounce gloves instead of 10-ounce gloves. The rounds will also be two minutes instead of three minutes and there will also be no official judges to score the fight. These rules were put in place to ensure the safety of both fighters, but the rules heavily favor Paul.

These rules greatly oppose Tyson, especially the 16-ounce gloves and fight time. Tyson has fought his entire career with 10-ounce gloves, having the fifth hardest punch of all time with a knockout (KO) rate of 88%. However, the heavier the gloves, the lighter the punch. While this protects Paul from serious injuries, boxing is one of the only sports where it is legal to hurt the opponent. Tyson shouldn’t be penalized for his skills and abilities but should fight just as he had for his entire professional career.

Paul also must survive only two-minute rounds instead of three minutes. There are a maximum of 12 rounds per boxing match, but on average, Paul fights in 4.6 rounds per fight. He is not used to long and demanding fights, so shortening the duration of each round only benefits Paul.

The fight will also not go onto Tyson’s or Paul’s professional record. Tyson has nothing to lose with this fight, he has already established himself as one of the greatest boxers. He will also be 58 when he fights Paul this summer. He has been retired for over a decade and will not be near how great he once was. On the other hand, Paul is 27 years old and is in his prime. Paul has everything to lose with this fight as with a loss, the boxing community may begin questioning his skills and ability. So for this loss to not go on either Tyson’s or Paul’s record is only beneficial for Paul who is still in his fighting career.

While the rules are heavily against Tyson, the match will still occur on July 20. Tyson looks to win a meaningless match in which he aims to embarrass Paul on the biggest stage in the world.
