Review of “No No Nanette”

On April 4–6, Maclay School’s theatre department presented the audience with their spring play called “No, No, Nanette.” This play takes place in the 1920s when romance was big but the scandals were even bigger. The story follows three couples that live together in a cottage in the middle of a blackmail scheme. The play was an amazing watch because of the incredible acting and fabulous songs. The tickets were not ideal, but other than that, it was a spectacular experience.

To make “No No Nanette” as wonderful as it was, the play had to have showstopping actors, and it certainly did. The main characters were played by Bryson Willis, Lila Bubriski, Campbell Ruff, Mya Rutledge, Ella Pike, Crew Carlile and Sloan Strickland. These actors truly took “No No Nanette” to another level. They showed true emotions, making the audience feel them as well. The actors also embodied their character, which made the whole watch more enjoyable and entertaining. The play also incorporated middle schoolers, introducing new faces to the audience.

The only thing that may have beaten the acting was the songs. As the audience followed the story, they also got to hear some of the most amazing voices. Some of the songs that were included were “Call of the Sea” sung by Billy and Girls, “Tea for Two" sung by Nanette, Tom and Company and “Telephone Girlie” sung by Billy, Flora, Winnie and Betty. All of the songs were done to perfection by the actors, who did not miss a single note and showcased incredible vocals.

The ticket prices were the most inconvenient part of the entire experience. They were $15 for adults, $10 for students and $25 for VIP seating. The adult tickets and VIP tickets were well-priced, but students should have been able to watch the show for free or for a lesser price. In most sports games, students get free tickets to watch the game, and it should be the same for plays as well. Although $10 may not seem like a lot, the majority of the time, the audience spends an additional amount when buying food at the concession stand.

Overall, “No No Nanette” was a fantastic show that incorporated humor and romance perfectly. The variety of actors as well as the acting was fantastic; the songs and diverse voices were incredible, and although ticket pricing was not ideal, it does not stop the appreciation for an amazing play.
