The Maclay girls soccer team kicked off the season the way they planned on Thursday, Nov. 9, against Leon. Earlier in the week, they had beaten Suwanee 5-0 but faced a competitive Leon squad. Although the Lions fought hard, they were no match for Maclay as the Marauders won 1-0.

The Marauders came out strong in the first half as freshman Maggie Bragg scored the opening goal, and senior Lawre Bradley May got the assist. The team went into the half with a 1-0 lead. Maclay’s good defense was displayed in this game, especially during the second half. They were united and supported one another throughout the entirety of the match. As the final whistle blew, the Marauders were more than excited, knowing they won a hard fought match.

“We did a good job at creating scoring opportunities and working together to get a win,” junior Bryce Storey said. “Overall, we stayed positive throughout the game.”

The first couple of games are critical for a successful season. Last year, the Marauders did not start out the way they wanted, but are looking to flip the switch this year. Their talent was on full display against Leon and the girls are hoping to keep up their winning streak.

“I think we played really well, especially knowing that this game was important to both teams,” junior Gray Burleson said. “Using that as motivation, we all gave 100% and came out with the win.”

Even though the Marauders came out victorious, they want to clean up crucial errors in order to challenge their opponents. From miscommunications to bad passes, the team has much to work on.

“We need to work on not letting bad calls get to us during the game,” Storey said. “We need to make sure we stay connected as a team.”

The Marauders team’s chemistry and talent have shown the Tallahassee community that they are proven winners, but they look to clean up their mistakes and improve on their strengths in practice next week. The Marauders hope to keep their perfect season alive as they have begun preparation for their match against Florida High on Nov. 14.

“I can’t wait to see what the team can do this year,” Burleson said.
