On March 26, the Maclay boys weightlifting team went to Taylor County High School for their district meet. The Marauders had 13 athletes qualify for the meet in their respective weight classes. The team went up against seven different schools including Florida High, Jefferson County and Madison County.
“It’s extremely fun to lift and compete against others,” junior Nick Streety said. “My goal is to maintain my weight and train hard so I can have better numbers for regionals.”
In this meet, the Marauders competed great, with many qualifiers placing in the top three. Eighth-grader Liam Cauley placed second in Olympic and third in traditional in the 119 weight class. Freshman Seth Starr earned first place in both events at 129. Senior Adam Bailey swept the 169 weight class with sophomore Will James placing third in both events. Senior Andrew Berenson destroyed his competition by also getting a double gold in the 183 lb class, and junior Justin Murphy placed second in Olympic and third in traditional in the 183 class. Streety placed third in Olympic at 199 and Manny Arisso placed third in traditional at 199. Lastly, junior Keaton Beach placed third in traditional in the unlimited weight class.
“It was a lot of fun,” Bailey said. “I did what I had to do to win, and I need to keep doing well for regionals.”
The qualifiers for the regional meet from the weightlifting team will have their next meet on Saturday, April 5.
