The History and Meaning Behind Veterans Day

In November of 1919, President Wilson declared Nov. 11 a national holiday–Veterans Day. This day celebrates the brave men and women who risked their lives for their country. In 1918, an armistice was created between the Axis powers–including Germany, Italy and Japan–and the Allied Powers–including the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, the United States and China–to end World War I. The armistice was put into play on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

There are many different ways to spend Veterans Day, whether it be writing a card to a Veteran or going to a local parade. Veterans Day is a time to appreciate those who have fought for their country. Alongside this, Tallahassee holds its annual Veterans Day Parade on the morning of Nov. 11 starting at South Monroe Street and ending at Duval Street. The parade is filled with flags, music, floats and different motor vehicles.
