Florida voters lined up at polling sites on Tuesday, Nov. 5, eager to cast their ballots on two landmark amendments—Amendment 3 and Amendment 4—that could reshape state law. Amendment 3 proposed the legalization of marijuana for adults 21 and older, permitting the possession, purchase and personal use of marijuana products and accessories for non-medical purposes through smoking, ingestion or otherwise. Amendment 4 proposed the restriction of any law from prohibiting, penalizing or delaying abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.
Amendment 3 received 55.89% voting yes with 44.11% voting no, and Amendment 4 received 57.15% voting yes with 42.85% voting no. Since both amendments required a 60% majority, neither was enacted into law.
The push for similar reforms in the state is likely to continue. For now, Florida’s stance on both marijuana legalization and abortion access remains unchanged.
