Decade-Long Rule of Canada Is Over
Mark Carney Replaces Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau was Canada’s prime minister for almost a decade, serving under the Liberal Party from 2015 to 2025. Trudeau announced on Jan. 6 that he would resign from office as his approval rating had plummeted from widespread frustration over his handling of issues including housing problems, grocery costs and foreign policy. Trudeau had been facing months of pressure from politicians within his party to step down.
“Canadians deserve a real choice in the next election,” Trudeau said. “It has become obvious to me, with the internal battles, that I cannot be the one to carry the Liberal standard into the next election.”
To replace Trudeau as the leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, an election was held. Mark Carney won the election with 86% of the party vote and was sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister on March 14. Carney vowed to fight against the United States President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian exports using his experience as a central banker.
