An Assassin on the Golf Course
Trump’s Second Assassination Attempt
When golfing on Sept. 15, former president Donald J. Trump was faced with an apparent assassination attempt. The suspect associated with the incident, Ryan Wesley Routh, was spotted by the Secret Service supposedly 300-500 yards away from Trump.
Routh was armed with an AK-47-style rifle, and was caught due to the visibility of the gun barrel. The Secret Service agent who initially saw the suspect immediately opened fire. Routh fled from the scene without firing any shots at Trump or the agents. The suspect was caught and detained in a neighboring county after a report was filed for the license plate and black Nissan. Routh did not resist when taken into custody.
Since Trump’s golf outing was unplanned, the Secret Service was unable to fully scan the area for threats. After the incident, Trump placed blame on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, claiming that the suspect believed their “rhetoric” and was motivated to act violently as a result.
Prior to the incident, Routh was charged with a felony conviction in 2002 for possessing explosives. So, it is unknown how Routh was in possession of a firearm, as generally a majority of states do not permit selling weapons to convicted felons.
