Review of “Love Hurts”

When thinking of love, a person thinks of kindness and joy, but the movie “Love Hurts” takes it to another level. The movie premiered on Feb. 7, showing a novel kind of love in the Valentine’s Day season. This movie uses talented actors to engage an audience and follows an suspenseful plot that leaves the audience stunned. It also implements comical parts with violence, creating a perfect balance of action and humor. These factors make “Love Hurts” worth watching.

Each character is played by an actor who not only embodies the role but also elevates it. The main character, Marvin Gable, is played by Ke Huy Quan, who did an incredible job. Quan is a well-known actor mainly known for his role in “The Goonies,” but he also won an Oscar in 2024 for “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The audience can see his emotions throughout the film and connect with his character’s complex situation. Another actor, Ariana DeBose, who is less known for her acting than for her voice, played a Quan sidekick named Rose. DeBose is mainly known for starring in plays such as “Hamilton” and “West Side Story” but decided to change up her genre. Although this is not easy for many actors, DeBose transitions from musical to comedy/action seamlessly. Other actors, such as Daniel Wu and Sean Astin, also create a connection with the audience, a vital factor in a good movie.

“Love Hurts” is classified as an action/adventure, but with many funny parts, it could be put in the comedy category. Some movies overdue a certain factor of their film–whether that be too much violence or too much comedy–but this movie has a perfect balance of both. Although the movie has fights, blood and lots of violence, the film perfectly balances by adding a joke, making the audience laugh and lighten the mood. The thrill and the humor mixed in create a perfect watch.

The final factor that truly makes the movie is the plot. “Love Hurts” does an outstanding job of creating an unpredictable plot, which keeps many viewers on their toes throughout the film. Director Jonathan Eusebio brings in a compelling plot that includes depth in character emotion, plot twist and an unforgettable storyline. The plot is what makes a movie successful, and “Love Hurts” achieves that.

Overall, the movie is exceptional and should be recognized. The acting from the diverse group of actors truly make the movie come to life, the combination of comedy and violence make it the best of both worlds and the captivating storyline keeps the audience focused. Although this may not be a typical Valentine’s day story, it is worth a watch.
