“We Live in Time" recently came into theaters and follows Almut, an ongoing cancer patient, and Tobias throughout their relationship and hardships. The movie sheds a light on the physical and mental toll that cancer patients deal with and demonstrates different outcomes. The movie illustrates these struggles through a nonlinear timeline, outstanding acting and a variety of emotions from the audience. “We Live in Time” is a story about love and loss.
The structure of “We Live in Time” differs from many movies because there are three separate storylines that jump back and forth. The movie begins with the end. The plot follows Almut being diagnosed with ovarian cancer for the second time, then struggling to decide whether she wants to be a mother and finally meeting Tobias for the first time. Most movies are filmed chronologically or include a few flashbacks, but this movie has storylines switching every 20 to 30 minutes. Viewers have to pay attention to the movie to understand and know what part of the story they are watching. The very end of the movie takes all the storylines and makes them come together in a cohesive conclusion.
A24, the entertainment company that produced many amazing films, including “We Live in Time” is known for choosing the perfect actors. In this film, Almut is played by Florence Pugh who has played a variety of roles including the well known films “Little Women” and “Black Widow.” In this movie, she did not shy away from perfection, truly embodying the role she was given. The other main actor in the movie is Andrew Garfield who is mostly known for his work in many of the Spiderman films. He did an absolutely amazing job in this movie that is different from most of the characters he has played. Both of these actors did a phenomenal job representing such a serious topic while somehow bringing light in the chaos of cancer. These people were what allowed viewers to experience the emotions and struggles of a cancer patient.
This movie provokes a mix of emotions throughout. Viewers feel Almut’s joy when her struggle with not being able to be a mother finally is resolved. Although many people wish this movie only brought them happiness, a lot of disappointment and pain is inevitably present in the movie. Almut is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and her first struggle, as for many other real-life cancer patients, is whether to undergo chemotherapy. She fears that if she dies, her daughter will forget about her, and finally struggles with not being there for her family. All these factors are shown throughout the movie, showing the audience devastating consequences of a real-life problem that so many people face worldwide.
This movie is not only a love story but also a tragedy. The amazing plot combines sides to create a whole, while the incredible actors deeply connect to viewers with a mix of emotions. A24 did a fantastic job with the film, and “We Live in Time” is recommended to all to raise awareness on cancer-related challenges.
