The month of October is dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer. In 2024 alone, more than 360,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. As awareness and technology advance more and more, early detection methods for breast cancer are being discovered. If the disease is caught in the earliest stages, added years of survival increase by about 99%. One of the most important steps in preventing breast cancer is knowing the signs.
The most common signs of breast cancer include lumps on the breast, change in size or shape of the breast, redness or flaky skin on the breast and pain in the breast or armpit. Early detection of these signs saves lives. Living a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a healthy weight, diet and physical activity and talking to a doctor regularly for checkups go a long way in preventing breast cancer. October is a time for everyone to come together and raise support for such a destructive disease.
