Top Five Fan Favorite Moments From the Grammys
The music industry’s biggest night of the year is the annual Grammy Awards, where artists, writers and producers are recognized for their accomplished work in the musical realm. The 2024 Grammy awards saw thrilling wins and sensational performances, as well as a shocking arrest. The following moments were fan favorites and highlights from this year's awards.
1. Taylor Swift broke records and announced her new album.
The world renowned pop star, Taylor Swift, made Grammy history by winning Album of the Year for her album, “Midnights,” for the fourth year in a row, making her the first artist to do so. Swift beat the other nominees, Jon Batiste, boygenius, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Janelle Monáe, Olivia Rodrigo and SZA. In Swift’s acceptance speech, she shocked the audience by announcing her 11th studio album, “Tortured Poets Society.” Fans have expressed on social media that they cannot wait for the new album. Swift now has 14 Grammy’s, showing she has dominated the music industry.
2. Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs perform “Fast Car”
In a tear jerking rendition, singer Tracy Chapman and country singer Luke Combs sang a duet of Chapman's song, “Fast Car.” In the Grammy’s back in 1989, Chapman first performed “Fast Car,” where she was awarded Best Female Pop Vocalist. Chapman revived this song and made her first live performance in many years alongside Combs, whose cover of the song is very popular. The performance was so moving, that the song reached No. 1 on iTunes in 24 hours.
3. SZA’s performance and win
Out of all the artists acknowledged during the Grammy awards, the singer SZA received a total of nine grammy nominations, the most out of everyone this year. Out of the nine Grammy nominations, SZA won three: Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance, Best R&B Song and Best Progressive R&B Song. During the show, SZA took the stage to perform. As the songs transitioned from “Snooze” to “Kill Bill”, the performance turned into an intricate sword fight. Along with her singing, talented dancers put on a show, using swords as props, dancing on the guests tables, flaming backdrops and even a guy flying up on a harness. SZA swept the Grammys this year, winning many awards and leaving the audience entertained from her spectacular performance.
4. The Memoriam
To honor the music legends who passed away in 2023, the Grammys held their annual “In Memoriam” segment. Stevie Wonder began the segment to honor his fellow singer and friend, Tony Bennet, who recently passed away at age 96. Wonder played the piano and sang the song, “For Once in my Life,” while a clip of Bennet singing along played on a video. Then, Annie Lennox sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” to honor Sinead O’Connor. Jon Batiste then took the stage, and alongside singer Ann Nesby, sang three songs to honor Clarence Avant. The final tribute was to singer Tina Turner. Fantasia Barrino performed an energetic ensemble with dancers and sparkly dresses to honor Turner.
5. Killer Mike won awards, then faced Arrest
After winning three grammys, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap performance, Killer Mike was arrested. At the Grammy awards, he was involved in an altercation that turned into a misdemeanor battery. Los Angeles Police Department officers handcuffed and escorted him out of the building. After being detained, his lawyer confirmed he was released from the police station.
