Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel “Dracula,” published in 1827. André Øvredal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” depicts the harrowing story of the doomed crew of the Demeter. Starring Liam Cunningham as the captain who practically carries this movie on his back and delivers the chilling narration of the events unfolding. The rest of the cast delivers decent performances and were able to keep this movie afloat. What should’ve been a heart pounding depiction of the famous dracula instead turned into a very generic and average movie.

The design of both the set and dracula were done well. The eerie setting of a boat stuck in the ocean is a perfect way of conveying the helplessness of the crew. This movie shares elements of Ridley Scott’s “Alien”. The Crew is forced to find ways of surviving and fighting back against a creature that they know nothing about. Like “Alien”, the monster design is very well done. It’s nice to see an actually menacing and feral looking Dracula that is truly unstoppable. However, he only gets about 5 minutes of screen time throughout the entire movie.

The cinematography was easily the best part of this film. Wide shots of the ocean help convey the hopelessness of the crew. Usually, a movie’s lighting  being too dark is a bad thing; however, the darkness builds as the film progresses and creates a great sense of dread and suspense. The dark corners make you question whether or not the characters are safe at all times. However, this is about as scary as the movie gets. It relies on cheap jumpscares which are disappointing and do not live up to the suspense that is built throughout the movie.

Although the cast of this movie is pretty good and has the amazing Liam Cunningham, the writing of the movie is pretty sloppy. It leaves you asking “why would they do that” many times. For some reason, they also don’t use enough of the better cast members. If you have someone as skilled as Liam Cunnigham you would think he would be in every scene. Instead, it focuses on people who either have zero character or just die 5 minutes later.

The potential this film had to be good was insane but instead it turned into a very average movie. Even Dracula could not save it.
