Starting of Senior Night Strong
Senior Kolton Lawson starts pitching for the Marauders and begins to throw strike after strike. The John Paul II players quickly realized that Lawson’s pitching was not taking a turn for the worse any time soon. As the batters slowly started to adjust, they began to send high balls into the outfield which allowed the Marauders some easy outs. When they finally got all three outs, everyone on the team came in and applauded Lawson for his great pitching.
One Down, two to go
Sophomore Andrew Berenson stands strong off the corner of first base as he waits for his team to field the ball. While waiting, he keeps an eye on the runner and notices him approaching the bag. Lucky, the Marauders manage to scoop it up quickly and throw it to Berenson. As the ball is traveling through the air, he knows it is extremely important that he catches it and secures the first out for the Marauders.
Family, Friends and Fans
Once the senior night festivities had taken place, the game was about to begin. As the Marauders walked onto the field, the audience was able to see the KL9 they all had written in black out on their cheeks. This was the team’s way of supporting senior Kolton Lawson as he was their only senior. The stands were packed with family, friends and fans that came out to support the varsity baseball team.
Perfect Timing
Part way through the fourth inning, John Paul II had a runner on third base and second base. Wanting to make sure they did not score, the Marauders baseball coach called a time out. During this break, the three outfielders took a knee and the infield players met with the coach on the pitcher’s mound. Thanks to this strategic time out, the Marauders were able to get all three outs before John Paul II was able to score which kept Maclay in the lead.
Sliding into Safety
Sophomore George Grant took a risk in the second inning and stole second. As he is sprinting to the base, his teammates and coaches yell “down”. This let Grant know that the John Paul II pitcher decided to throw the ball to his second basemen to try and tag Grant out. Thanks to the Marauders quick thinking and communication, Grant was able to successfully slide into second base and stay safe.
Waiting for the Perfect Pitch
Junior Grady Brown begins his batting turn and shows that he is about to bunt. As the first two pitches go by, his coaches change the call, and tell him to swing away. John Paul II was not expecting this sudden change. When the third pitch goes by, Brown decides he is ready to swing. The ball goes soaring through the air and is bobbled by an in-fielder.
SAFE!
As soon as junior Grady Brown’s bat made contact with the ball, he began sprinting to the bag. Knowing that the ball would soon be thrown to first base, all he could hope for was that he beat it to the bag. While Brown is running through the bag, he breathes a big sigh of relief as soon as the umpire calls him safe.
Rising Star
Eighth grader Chase Fuller hits his second home run of the season in the game against John Paul II, Tuesday night. Although Fuller is only an eighth grader, he has already been on varsity for two years. As he spends time practicing with the varsity team, he learns a ton and gets to improve his skills throughout the season. Despite his young age, his presence on the Maclay Varsity Baseball team was extremely valuable for the team this past season.
Cutting it Close
Sophomore Zeke Podgorski’s massive lead off of first base almost ended poorly for him Tuesday night. While taking his lead, Podgorski kept his eye on the John Paul II pitcher just in case he decided to check him. Luckily, Podgorski’s coaches and teammates alerted him that the pitcher was turning to throw the ball. Because of his quick reaction, Podgorski was able to dive into first base and beat the ball making him safe.
