Celebrating the Seniors
The first senior to get recognized Thursday night was Emily Macri. She has been playing varsity tennis since she was in seventh grade and has created hundreds of amazing memories on the court. As Macri walked to her coach, her fellow teammates cheered her on and told her how much they were going to miss her next year. Once she made it to her coach, her doubles partner was announced and they were handed a new case of balls. Just like that, her last ever home game was about to begin.
Great Day to Watch Tennis
Thursday April 6, Maclay varsity tennis faced off against John Paul II around 3:30pm. With the sun shining and birds chirping, parents and students made their way down to the tennis court to support the seniors. As they watch from the grass and bleachers, they continually cheer and support all of the players throughout their matches. While the spectators were watching, many were handed big heads of the seniors. Moments later there was a sea of blown-up images of the seniors Emily Macri and Oakley Deison heads bobbing around.
Clean Sweep
Ending senior night on a high, both the girl’s and boy’s doubles teams secured the win for Maclay tennis. Senior Oakley Deison and Sophomore John Fletcher Butler were hard at work during their match. Point by point, they slowly started to grow their lead over JPII. Throughout the match, Deison and Butler would meet in the middle of the court after a good play and celebrate their efforts. While watching the game, it is easy to see that they make a great pair, and really enjoy playing tennis together.
Putting in the Work
Doubles pair juniors Rowan Grey and Bradley Carnes have been working hard all season to stay first seed. Many people would be stressed because of the pressure that competing as number one seed carries, however, Grey and Carnes have handled it well this season and have continually won games for varsity tennis. Working on their aggressive serves helped them tremendously throughout the game against JPII, securing the win.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Number one doubles seed, senior Emily Macri and freshman Megan Vegas, rely on each other throughout the match allowing them to smoke JPII. They were constantly communicating throughout the entire match. Serve after serve, they racked up the points and quickly finished the game. Overflowing with joy, Macri and Vegas celebrated the last point knowing that it was Macri’s last on the Maclay tennis court.
