Almost Showtime
On Friday and Saturday night, the Maclay Thespian Club showcased their talent to a large audience in the Cartee Gym. They have been working hard on perfecting their musical, “Into the Woods”, since early February. “Into the Woods” was the first musical produced by the upper school since 2013. It follows many different characters and mini stories from Brothers Grimm fables that eventually all connect. The main message that is portrayed throughout this musical is that you must always be careful what you wish for.

The Family Curse
One of the first character’s stories the play dives into is the baker and his wife. Played by seniors Robert Wood and Chari Beamer, the couple has always wanted to bring a child of their own into the world, but have never been successful. Throughout the play, many of the other characters have some sort of connection and meet the baker and his wife. When the couple finds themselves wishing for a child, an evil witch appears and lets them in on a little secret. She then tells them that if they wish to reverse the curse she has put on them, they must fetch her a cape as red as blood, a cow as white as milk, hair as yellow as corn and a slipper as pure as gold.

Cinderella With a Twist
When Cinderella came on the stage, many viewers thought that they would be watching the same original story that everyone has seen 100 times. However, many small details had been changed and kept the viewers on their toes. Throughout the play, the baker’s wife would run into Cinderella and ask her why she was running from the prince and even begged her for one of her gold shoes. Towards the end, the viewers find out that Cinderella purposely left one of her shoes on the steps hoping that the prince would find it and come chasing after her so she would not have to chase him. Just as she had planned, the prince went out on a search to find the owner of the shoe and marry her as soon as possible.

Tit for Tat
When Little Red Riding Hood finally gets to her grandmother’s house, she notices that she looks a little different. As she approaches the bed, she comments on how big her grandmas’ ears and teeth are. Moments later, she is eaten by the Big Bad Wolf that was pretending to be her grandma. Luckily for little red, the baker was still looking for the red cape and stumbled upon the grandma’s cabin. When he realizes the wolf ate her, the baker kills him and retrieves the little red riding hood, the three little pigs and her grandma all from his stomach. As a way to thank the baker for saving her and grandma, little red riding hood gives the baker her cape and waves goodbye.

Behind the Scenes
In the very back of the Cartee Gym were three amazing teachers that controlled the stage lighting and sound. Though there were a few small lighting delays, the team kept on moving and did a great job for their first show. Musical theater teacher, Mildred Seckel, joined them in the back and made notes on what the actors needed to work on for their next showing of “Into the Woods”. Between choosing a musical that would surprise the audience and directing the whole thing, Seckel has played a massive role in making this musical a huge success.
