A hot topic amongst schools has been the new chat bot known as ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is a conversational AI language model developed by OpenAI to assist users in generating human-like text that answers questions as best as possible. The interface was first introduced and released in June 2020. The first model was known as OpenAI’s GPT-3 language model. Since then the system has been updated and OpenAI released the ChatGPT model on Nov. 30, 2022.

OpenAI created ChatGPT to fulfill the purpose of understanding human language and generating responses that are most relevant, coherent and useful to users. OpenAI hopes that the interface will be able to improve various tasks, such as language translation, content creation and customer support.

“To my knowledge it’s incredibly well made,” freshman Will Yaeger said. “They have an incredibly large data set. For all the teachers out there, there is a program out there called ChatGPTZero which allows you to insert an excerpt of text and it will tell you whether or not it was made by ChatGPT.”

The purpose of ChatGPT creates a whole new world for users because it can generate hundreds of words on a topic. For example, if the user asked ChatGPT about apples the provided response was, “An apple is a type of fruit that is typically round or oval-shaped and varies in color from green to red, yellow or a combination of these colors. Apples have a firm, juicy flesh and are a good source of fiber and nutrients, including vitamin C and potassium. They are often eaten raw as a healthy snack or used in a variety of culinary dishes, such as pies, sauces and salads. Apples are grown in many different parts of the world and come in in many different varieties, each with its own unique flavor and texture.”

“It’s certainly changed school because instead of reading something you can copy and paste it as a full summary of the article,” senior Slater Bayliss said. “You can have it write an essay for you, write computer code and math problems, so I think it’s going to make people rethink how to do school.”

ChatGPT can come in handy for a multitude of tasks. However, there is a major concern on whether students abuse it or not.

“Somewhat discouraged that they wouldn’t take the time to actually write the paper,” English teacher Dr. Thomas Bevilacqua said. “It’s something where there are certain uses for this software, but using it as a way to get out of normal assessment skills to write and communicate clearly makes me disappointed.”
